The gunman in the deadly shooting at the Allen Premium Outlets mall has been identified as 33-year-old Mauricio Garcia.
Garcia, identified by the Texas Department of Public Safety, was a security guard and US Army veteran.
An Allen Police Department officer attending an unrelated call at the mall heard the gunfire and “neutralized” the suspect, who killed eight innocent shoppers and mall staff members in Saturday’s attack.
According to the Independent, Garcia drove to the mall with several weapons and opened fire as soon as he stepped out of his vehicle. An AR-15 rifle and a handgun were reportedly found on him and in his car.
Garcia served in the US Army in 2008 but was removed due to concerns around his mental health, according to WFAA.
On Sunday, Governor Greg Abbott attended a community vigil in Allen.
In an interview on Fox News Sunday with Shannon Bream, the governor emphasized mental health as the “long-term solution” for gun violence in America.
